“Roots-Rap”
In this unique version of Everything We Need (originally recorded for Steve Bell’s 2008 release Devotion,) Steve teams up with Christian hip-hop artist Fresh I.E. to put a new sound to this powerful song written by Gord Johnson.
Fresh I.E. (Robert Wilson) is a Canadian multi-grammy nominated recording artist living in Winnipeg, traveling and ministering to at-risk urban and rural youth. This video depicts the simple beauty of God amongst people living in an urban landscape as well as the tension between faithful hope for a better world and the reality of urban poverty.

The original version of “Everything We Need” can be found on the album Devotion.aa“When I heard the rap Fresh brought into the studio, I knew this was going to work. His voice added strength and experience to my vision for the video and sparked the passion lying in Steve’s unwrinkled vocals.” Jeff Lukin/ video directora Read more of Director’s Commentary…aREVIEW: Local Juno-award winner Steve Bell teamed up recently with Fresh IE to bring you a new mish-mash rendition of Everything We Need. I love it when artists embrace each other’s talents from across genres. This culmination of creativity is what I think art is all about. By the way, isn’t the video done incredibly well. Exactly what I would have pictured. Hats off to everyone involved. – Kyle Rudge, Ignite 107 Radio Winnipeg |

How can I get a copy of this amazing video to use at church? Can I purchase it? If so where?
David – the video is not for sale – you can just use it if you know how to get it off the net. I’m a bit of a Luddite about such things so I don’t know how to do this. I’ll ask my web-guy to see if he can offer some help. – Steve

Hi Steve, this is a powerful video -reminiscent for me of Simon and Garfunkel’s Silent Night. I only wish it might have had some aboriginal children or perhaps it did and imissed them.
Peace and blessings!

Wonderful gave me goosebumps.
I loved the song in it’s original format, but this new interpretation is very moving.
Great mix of two different styles of praise.
Thanks so much
I listen to your music while I create my work
and Here by the Water is my special song.

I think this is awesome. As soon as I got the email from Signpost about this I just thought – of course that would work. But who would have thought of it? That’s an awesome message and an awesome melding of two styles of music! Great job!

Although I am not one to listen to Rap per se, I will tell you that this was intriguing and emotional to watch and listen. WIth all that I have been watching and listening in the news of late regarding Barack Obama and the Health Care Reform issues and such-this video put much in perspective for me. The black and white partnership of voice and message carried hope and concern for all children. This is what all political messages and messengers should be talking about and acting upon. These are our elected officials. This is their job. If it takes one song such as this to magnify the need and desire to reach a solution then the two of you have my blessing on this piece of music. It truly says much more than the sum of its parts….thank you for your collaboration.

Wow! Y’know, as soon as I heard the accompaniment intro, I knew the rap would fit. Video’s well done, too.
Steve, I’m reading a little gem of a book these days, that somehow this connected with, for me. I’m not sure if it’s really a direct connection. I’d have to listen a bit closer to Fresh I.E.’s lyrics, I think. Anyway, I’d been thinking you might enjoy the book, and when I’m done, I might send my copy out to you, or try to get one sent to you. It’s called “I live now, not I”, by Fr. Patrick McNulty, of Madonna House. You might not connect the book with the clip yourself, but I think you’d find the thesis of the book interesting. I don’t know if you know anything about St. (Padre) Pio of Pietrelcina, but this book makes me understand his unique mission in a whole new way. (It happens to be his feast day, today, too.) Happy St. Pio Day!
