Early in September we released a video of myself and Fresh I.E. performing a unique version of the song Everything We Need, from my recent Cd Devotion.
The video itself was the brainchild of Signpost webmaster Jeff Lukin who approached me earlier in the spring to see if I’d be interested in a project where Fresh I.E. would rap over the instrumental sections of the already recorded song.

Now… here’s the dirty little secret: months earlier I had already heard something quite like this. Jon Buller was recording a new CD and had a version of the same song (Everything We Need) already recorded with Fresh I.E. for his soon-to-be-released project. I informed Jeff we’d have to get Jon’s permission to go ahead with an idea Jon had first. Jon, of course, was very big about the whole thing and expressed interest in seeing how different these two approaches might be.
So…. since Jon’s new CD is coming out in the next few weeks (with his version on it) we thought we’d post the actual lyrics written by Fresh for my version. In a couple of weeks, we’ll post Jon’s unique interpretation of the same song and Fresh’s totally different approach to his rap for that version. Are you still following?
This is just fun – to see how the same song can be interpreted so differently. Maybe, also for fun, I’ll soon post Jon Buller’s rock version of my folksy worship anthem God Our Protector. First time I heard it, I burst out laughing in delighted disbelief that my harmless little ditty could be so aggressively re-interpreted.
Anyway – see below Fresh I.E’s lyric. Below that is the video itself in case you haven’t yet seen it yet. Below that is a congratulations to Fresh for his recent wins at the 2009 Covenant Awards in Calgary and a link to his website.
Cheers!

Vision to reach and see the world set free
Tears of a young child…weep… drops fall to the street
Poverty… pain… pressure… probable cause… the stress
Of not knowing when the next meal will end this aggression
Now the question: can the world hear the cries of oppression
Are we caught up and obsessed with these worldly possessions
Now I’m stretching my hands out sharing these blessings
You’re everything that we need in this global recession
And creation’s groans for the manifestation
Men have been praying… waiting for the day we’re awakened
(have mercy) on our children enslaved and exploited
Exposed, bonded, prostituted and voided
My mission: fulfill these kids’ dreams and wishes
Be a voice for the fatherless… mourn with the nations
(have mercy) you fed thousands with 5 loaves and 2 fishes
Take these words and feed a whole generation-Fresh I.E.
