Spiritual Food and Clothing – The Ministry of Steve Bell

One of the things I admire about Steve Bell is his generosity – when his own ministry is in need, he didn’t hesitate to put aside his own agenda. When the Haiti earthquake hit, his blog centred on how we can help and inspire others to help. I have been working for Steve and his manager Dave Zeglinski for three years now – actually marking the anniversary date because it means a lot to me. Before I worked here, I admired Steve Bell and his music, but didn’t understand the far-reaching effects of his actual ministry on real people.

The humanitarian side of Steve that takes trips around the world, in particular the ones with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank , and the photos he takes and brings home, inspired me to take up my paint brush and re-discover my love of oil painting.

Steve’s music effects other people in many ways. I find myself talking to individuals all across the world who are inspired by his melodies, Scripture-based lyrics, down-to-earth stories and humbly real personality. One has only to read the comments on Steve’s website after a concert, or a refreshing blog that he has written. One lady named Sue loves to paint abstract art while playing “Wings of an Eagle”!

This year my husband and I signed up to make monthly donations to support his ministry through IncarNATION. Once upon a time I wondered if my donations are better placed helping feed and clothe others around the world, but one has to also give to places that feed and clothe the spiritual side of people, and draw them closer to their loving Father. It’s thrilling for me to see the list of people who donate monthly, or make regular donations to Steve’s ministry. That takes a lot of trust!

Carolyn2Steve has inspired other artists as well. He inspires other artists to write their own music for the purpose of praise and worship. Carolyn Arends is a close friend of his and artist whose ministry is very similar. I sometimes call her the female Steve Bell (don’t be offended, Carolyn!).  I am attending a Bible study on “Believing God, Not just Believing IN Him” and her lyrics for “Be Still” in her new album Love Was Here First jumped out at me this week:

    Be Still - Carolyn Arends

    excerpt:

My ‘what-ifs’ collide with my ‘wherefores’ and ‘whys’
‘Til the only way that I’ll survive
Is if I will be still
And know that you are God

Oh how I need a vacation
‘cause it’s so exhausting pretending I’m God
There would be much less frustration
If I would let you do your job.

BTW: Carolyn is going to tour very soon with Amanda Falk – they’re performing in Winnipeg in March (details TBA), and I can hardly wait!!  Read about her album Love Was Here First.

Faye: Your painting is so life-like that It’s hard to believe it is an oil painting! You are very talented and thanks for sharing it with us! Judy

      Reply from Faye: Thanks, Judy!

I could not agree more Faye. Steve does the things we dream about doing but never do. He is our surrogate in many ways. I also aspire to his modesty, but with a talent like mine, it can never happen…I wish it could. He is a treasure, and Faye… please don’t tell him I said this stuff.
