So very pleased to announce a new website for Signpost Music which is the mother company for all things Steve Bell as well as an online distribution outlet for notable artists such as Bob Bennett, Carolyn Arends, Jacob Moon etc. (Click HERE to view all the artists.)
I started Signpost back in the early 90’s with my manager Dave Zeglinski primarily because I couldn’t get any record labels interested in what I was doing. And so, out of the frustration of pounding my head against the seemingly impenetrable wall of the music industry we just decided to do our own thing and in the end, I think it has the best possible course.
Over the years we developed a modest but effective infrastructure for the distribution of my music and started to share that infrastructure by taking on the music of other artists. Beginning with Carolyn Arends and Bob Bennett we released the Living Room series of albums where myself, Carolyn and Bob each recorded an “unplugged” album and then toured as a trio across Canada. Those concerts are still some of my favorite memories of musical camaraderie and the sheer joy of hanging with such terrific folks.
Shortly after that, we started to distribute the music of Glen Soderholm who is a great friend and mentor of mine. Glen’s thoughtful theological/devotional/personal songwriting is wonderful and hugely influential on my work.
Shortly after that we stumbled upon the remarkable work of Jacob Moon and began to distribute his work as well as taking him on tour with me where night after night he received ecstatic standing ovations after short four-song warm-up sets. It was a problem actually 🙂
Since then we’ve taken on the work of the loveable Mike Janzen, Jay Calder, Kerri Woelke, Rei Hotoda, Adrian Plass, Fergus Marsh, Diana Pops, Jon Buller, Spencer Capier, Kevin Ramessar and Gayle Salmond. At the new site you can read brief bios of each of these and sample their music artistry.
As much as I love writing and performing my own music, I think I am equally energized by sharing the music of each of these my friends with those those of you who are receptive to such things.
This fall will see new releases from Carolyn Arends, Bob Bennett, Jon Buller, Jacob Moon and a new artist who we are very excited about, Amanda Falk. To stay on top of all these events keep checking into www.signpostmusic.com If you haven’t yet signed up for the e-newsletter make sure to do so and that way we can let you know when there are new events and projects that may interest you.
POST ROADTRIP REPORT
Last week, my son Micah and I packed up the car and headed to London Ontario to retrieve some of his belongings he left behind when he moved back home in the spring. We decided to go through the states so we could visit some friends in Chicago and also, on the way home, take in a couple of days of the annual Lollapoloosa Rock Festival in downtown Chicago.
My son, also a musician (bass and guitar,) is probably a bigger music fan than I am and used the opportunity of having me in the car for 48 hrs to educate me on his favorite music – especially the bands we’d see at the festival: Ben Folds and Kings of Leon. As well, Micah educated me on the music of Bob Dylan who for some reason I have never really gotten into but ironically, have now started to really appreciate through my 19 year old son.
The festival itself is huge- some reports claimed close to 300,000 over the three days. I’ve never seen anything quite like it and it was a riot to hang with Micah and a couple of his friends from Winnipeg who were also there.
The other highlights of the trip was an great evening hanging with my son-in-law Steve in London. Ironically, my daughter Sarah and grandson Luca were in Winnipeg when I was in London 🙁
And lastly, I thoroughly enjoyed a dinner party in Chicago hosted by my great friends Carol and Jim. The other guests were Jim and Janna-Lee Croegaert. For those of you who don’t know, Jim Croegaert is the writer of several songs I’ve recorded, most notable being Here by the Water. He also wrote Why Do We Hunger for Beauty, We Come, House of Peace and Keeping Vigil -all songs I’ve recorded on various albums. (click on song title to read lyrics and see which album or albums the song appears.)
Jim is, seriously, the best songwriter I’ve ever met. And he has a remarkable story. I’m gonna take some time and do a feature article on him soon. But that will have to wait for another time.
Home now! The next trip for me is in a couple of weeks when Nance and I will be driving our other son Jesse to Victoria and getting him settled there to begin a four year degree in Music and Computer Science.
Some time in mid-September I’ll be back on the road for another season of concerts. I’m looking forward to getting back at it.
