JUNO Winner Steve Bell Celebrates 30 Year Career with WSO

“Steve Bell’s concerts have become a highly anticipated tradition at the WSO,” says Trudy Schroeder, Executive Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. “The experience should not be missed.”

For immediate release:

Winnipeg singer/songwriter Steve Bell will take the stage October 25 at the Centennial Concert Hall for his 14th concert with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

“Steve Bell’s concerts have become a highly anticipated tradition at the WSO,” says Trudy Schroeder, Executive Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. “The experience should not be missed.”

History:

In 2006, the WSO invited Steve Bell to collaborate with them in a concert of his music set to full orchestration. Composer Mike Janzen was enlisted to write the scores and a date was set that randomly happened to be November 17 — Bell’s birthday.

“We had no idea if folks would come” Bell recollects. “My concerts are typically casual and inexpensive. It was asking a lot of my fans to entertain a completely different experience of my music.” It was a risk worth taking, however, as the initial concert sold out and set the course for similar symphony concerts across Canada and the US including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Canada’s legendary Massey Hall in 2011.

This year’s concert is particularly sweet for Bell as it will celebrate the 30th anniversary of his first solo release “Comfort my People” in 1989. Bell’s career since has been marked by 21 albums, 2500+ concerts world-over, two JUNOS, multiple Prairie Music awards, an international award-winning book series on ancient spiritual traditions, and a handful of citizenship awards for his social advocacy work.

“I am thrilled to be opening this concert with a new score for the title track of my first album,” muses Bell. “I’ve been blessed with a career I never would have thought to hope for when I wrote that song. It’s been a remarkable and meaningful journey.”
